Carrier Delivery Team member Sam Weaver was the third employee hired at Bold Penguin and remains the longest standing. He has worn many hats over the years as Bold Penguin continues to address commercial insurance trends.

There are several aspects of integrations I maintain, such as technical documentation and how users interact with carriers within Bold Penguin. I am the custodian of our North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) mappings. The mappings determine which classes can quote with which carriers, and there are probably half a million mapped entries at this point. In addition, I also spearhead many platform-wide product enhancements that impact our carriers. Lastly, I provide support for strategic partners, whether it is how they interact with carriers or Bold Penguin as a whole.
This year our teams very much wanted to focus on speeding up our engineering velocity and providing more agency for users to make updates and enhancements in the platform. We created tooling that allows faster feedback loops from partner documentation to platform updates and automated several steps in the entire process.
Where half a dozen people would have been required to estimate, develop, test, and ship updates, now one or two can shepherd them. This resulted in us being able to ship changes in hours instead of days or weeks. This means Bold Penguin can better accommodate the ever-growing panel of carriers on our platform, and the enhancements we make to all of their integrations.
Before Bold Penguin I was running a retail/wholesale business with two other partners. I liked being a part of multiple operations in a company and taking risks, but our reach in the industry was starting to plateau. My best friend was actually employee number two at Bold Penguin and recruited me. Initially, I was a bit wary because I didn’t know much about commercial insurance, but then I saw the vision that Bold Penguin has for the industry and how insurtech is reshaping insurance. I have a personal motto that I won’t sell a product I wouldn’t buy myself, and I was sold from the very beginning.
The one ingredient that I use in every hot sauce we make is honey! My hot sauces are typically on the hotter side, so a little sweetness really balances out the heat. For our wedding we went tame and made a cayenne honey jalapeño sauce and it was a hit. Honey creates a good consistency, whether you’re thickening a runny sauce or making a thicker one more spreadable. It also acts as a good emulsifier!

Here’s a quick recap of details in this article featuring three-plus questions with Carrier Delivery Team member Sam Weaver:

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the way businesses operate. It’s also transforming the way cybercriminals attack. AI tools help businesses automate workflows, quickly analyze data, and increase overall efficiency. But on the flipside, it can also be used to create threats that are faster and harder to detect than ever before. Cybersecurity Awareness Month is a great time to brush up on how quickly the cybersecurity landscape is changing due to AI and how you can help your business customers stay ahead of the game. For business owners, regardless of size, the risk of a cyberattack is increasing, with potentially catastrophic financial and reputational consequences.
